A term particularly related to the eighteenth century opera house, in which special effects, such as storms at sea or heavenly apotheosis, were fashionable. These necessitated elaborate, large and imaginative machines to create them. The term also applies to all the generations of theatre effects mechanisms (other than lighting devices) since then.
